The Connor Consultancy - "We see things differently"

Case Study

Delivering a Culture of Performance

The Business Objectives

Group IS, the IT division of The Carphone Warehouse has evolved rapidly since the Company was founded in 1989. Senior Management recognised the need to show employees how they could develop their careers in the company and to provide more direction and support to individuals wanting to do so. In short, they wanted to inject some ‘oxygen' into the existing personal development programme ‘MAXIMISE'.

The Business Issues

As a result of rapid evolution, Group IS had grown a flexible workforce which offered most opportunity to those who were quick to learn or eager to try out new skills. As the company was maturing, business processes were becoming more formalised and there was a requirement to more clearly define roles, skill requirements and development plans for individuals to move from one job to another.

The Connor Consultancy was asked to build a career development framework which aligned with Group IS business processes and helped individuals to better understand what they needed to do to advance their careers.

The Business Outcomes

By defining jobs in terms of competencies and performance standards, and building job families which align with each business process, employees were encouraged to assess their current skills capability and development needs.

The new framework was then integrated with the existing personal development programme, MAXIMISE, and made available online for employees to use. Based on recent surveys of employees, this has increased:

The business has a tool for assessing skills gaps, for developing core skills (it has already run assessment centres for Project Managers and Business Analysts) and for mapping rewards to performance and career progression. Group IS has matured its processes for developing skills and performance.
